The Crawleys have been the Earls of Grantham since 1772. In the drawing rooms and library and beautiful bedrooms, with their tall windows looking across the park, lives the family, but below stairs are other residents, the servants, as fiercely possessive of their ranks as anyone above.

Some of them are loyal to the family and are committed to Downton as a way of life, others are moving through, on the look out for new opportunities or love or just adventure. The difference being that they know so many of the secrets of the family, while the family knows so few of theirs...

Matthew Crawley and his mother Isobel arrive at Downton, and Isobel and the Dowager Countess Violet find their views clashing from the outset. Matthew has difficulty settling in to this new life, and the staff do little to ease his discomfort. Carson is mortified when confronted by his past, but finds an ally in an unexpected quarter. Violet attempts to promote a match between Matthew and Mary, but an insulted Mary quashes the idea, revealing to her sisters who she has in her sights instead. Isobel is elected to serve on the hospital board.

Their attraction ends up sparking a series of events whose consequences end up rippling through the entire household. Bates takes action to help cure his limp.

Sybil's ends up putting herself in danger when a fight breaks out at an election results meeting. Bates manages to clear his name over the missing wine but he decides to resign rather than name the real culprit who is responsible.
