Matthew has difficulty settling in to this new life, and the staff do little to ease his discomfort. Carson is mortified when confronted by his past, but finds an ally in an unexpected quarter. Violet attempts to promote a match between Matthew and Mary, but an insulted Mary quashes the idea, revealing to her sisters who she has in her sights instead. Isobel is elected to serve on the hospital board.
