Wobble to Death is a murder mystery novel by Peter Lovesey. The book is set in 1879 at the Agricultural Hall in Islington, England. A six-day, 500-mile speedwalking race is taking place, known as the "wobble". Crowds have gathered to place bets on the next world champion.
One of the favored contenders dies under suspicious circumstances. Sergeant Cribb and his assistant, Constable Thackery, are called to investigate. The death of the contender introduces Sergeant Cribb, who goes on to investigate sports-related deaths in a series of eight books.
The book is cleverly constructed and holds the reader's attention throughout. The murderer is unmasked via logic, rather than random guesswork.
