The book is about a young woman who hires Hercule Poirot to investigate the murder of her father, Amyas Crale, a well-known painter. Amyas was poisoned by his wife, Caroline, who was convicted of the murder and died in prison. However, Caroline left a note to her daughter claiming her innocence. The daughter, Carla Lemarchant, believes her mother and wants proof so that she can marry without fear of harming her husband-to-be.
