The story is about the chivalric death of Roland and his companions, how he is betrayed by Ganelon, and avenged by Charles. The story begins when Charlemagne (a.k.a. Charles the Great) has won and Christianized all of Spain, except for the mountain stronghold of Sarraguce, which is the last pagan holdout.
